Moving to Dubai with your pet: a practical guide for UK expats

Dubai is one of the most popular destinations for UK expats moving with dogs and cats. There is no quarantine on arrival, direct flights operate daily from London, and the veterinary infrastructure in the city is excellent.

The documentation checklist

• ISO 15-digit microchip
• Rabies vaccination administered after microchipping
• Core vaccines (DHP for dogs; FVRCP for cats) up to date
• Internal and external parasite treatments within 14 days of departure
• Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an OV and endorsed by APHA, valid for 10 days
• For dogs: Dubai Municipality import permit

Which airlines fly pets to Dubai

• Emirates (EK): Cargo only. Does not accept brachycephalic breeds. Book at least 4 weeks ahead.
• Etihad (EY): Cargo and checked baggage on some fare classes. Does not accept brachycephalic breeds. Note: Etihad’s hub is Abu Dhabi — onward transfer to Dubai required.
• British Airways (BA): Does not currently accept pets in the hold on UAE routes.

Arriving at Dubai International (DXB)

Pets travelling as air cargo arrive at Dubai Cargo Village. Allow 3–5 hours from flight landing for your pet to clear customs. Airpets’ local partner handles customs clearance and transfers your pet.

Registering your pet in Dubai

Dogs must be registered with Dubai Municipality after arrival. Register at Bur Dubai Veterinary Centre. Annual licence renewal is required.
