USA pet relocation checklist

The USA is one of the most accessible destinations for UK pet owners. The preparation window is 6–8 weeks for most dogs and cats, but the 2024 CDC rule updates introduced new requirements for dogs — make sure you are following the current process.

6–8 weeks before travel

• Contact Airpets and confirm your destination state (some states have additional requirements — Hawaii is a special case)
• Confirm your dog is microchipped (ISO 15-digit) and at least 6 months old
• Ensure rabies vaccination is current and was administered after microchipping
• Complete the CDC Dog Import Form online at the CDC website — reference number must appear on health certificate
• Book airline cargo space: British Airways or American Airlines

2 weeks before travel

• Purchase IATA-compliant travel crate in correct size for your pet
• Label crate with Live Animal stickers, your contact details, and feeding instructions
• Book Official Veterinarian (OV) appointment for USDA-endorsed health certificate

10 days before travel

• OV issues health certificate — valid for 10 days from issue date
• Health certificate references CDC Dog Import Form number
• Submit health certificate to APHIS USDA for endorsement — allow 5–7 working days by post, or use a next-day courier service to a USDA APHIS office
• Confirm endorsed certificate has been returned and all details are correct
• Airpets reviews all documents

Travel day

• No food for 4 hours before check-in; water available until check-in
• Attach labelled water bowl to crate door grill
• Arrive at cargo terminal at least 2 hours before scheduled departure
• Ensure original USDA-endorsed health certificate, CDC form number, and vaccination records travel with the pet

After arrival

• Present health certificate and CDC documentation to CBP officer at port of entry
• Check state-specific licensing or registration requirements for your destination state
• Book first health check with US vet
• Update microchip registration to a US database
